FFA Members Excel in Spring Career Development Events

Agronomy

Renee Burdett, Luke Brill, Stacy Springer, and Tara Zasadzinski are the members of this year’s FFA agronomy team. They placed first at the Ashland, Miami Trace, and Mt. Gilead invitational. Also they placed 2nd at Marysville. The agronomy team soon dominated at state placing 1st out of 37 teams and once again earned a chance to compete at nationals. This was three years in a row the agronomy team has one the State title.

The agronomy contest is designed to assess the student's knowledge of agronomic practices for the production of field and forage crops. A practical examination requires the student to identify specimens of crop and weed plants and seeds, diseases, and insects or their damage. Two written tests cover the use of soil tests and county soil surveys, current agronomic practices, and fertilizer, pesticide or sprayer calibration problems and their solution.

Equine Management

Sandra Murphy, Kayla Cooperider, and Jennifer Murphy are this year’s FFA Equine Management team. They placed 26th at the Miami Trace invitational, and 23rd at the Mt. Gilead invitational. The team went to state and placed 52nd out of 104 teams. The horse management CDE is an educational activity designed as a practical method of teaching students current horse evaluation and selection techniques and management.

General Livestock

This year’s FFA General Livestock team consists of Jennifer McNamee, Jacci Erwin, Stormy Foos and Grant McNamee. The team placed 12th at the Ashland invitational, 26th at the Miami Trace invitational, 24th at Marysville invitational, and 10th at the Mt. Gilead invitational. At the state competition the team placed 76th out of 141 teams.

The general livestock CDE is an educational program designed as a practical method of teaching students to recognize quality production animals. The skills students learn in evaluating general livestock should make them better livestock producers and consumers by giving them practical experience in identifying and understanding characteristics that affect production and quality.

Poultry

The 2005 FFA poultry team consisted of Heather Knisley, Andrea Frey, and Adrienne Gibson. They placed 14th at the Ashland Invitational, 12th at the Miami Trace invitational, and 22nd at the Marysville invitational. The team also placed 26th out of 54 teams at this year’s state competition. To poultry contest is designed to stimulate learning activities relative to the production, processing, marketing, and consumption of poultry products.

Wildlife Management

The FFA wildlife team this year consists of Gus Jerew, Blake McElroy, Kevin Blair, and Adam Conrad. They placed 10th at Ashland, 7th at Marysville, and 8th at Mt. Gilead. At state the wildlife team placed 14th out of 44 teams. The purpose of the contest is to stimulate interest and to promote instruction in the areas of fish and wildlife management, as well as, to provide recognition for those who have demonstrated skills and competencies as a result of natural resources instruction.
