North Union FFA Small Engines Team Places Second in District Six Contest The small gas engine skills CDE (Career Development Event) is an educational activity designed as a practical method of teaching students to properly disassemble repair and perform preventative maintenance skills on small gasoline engines. Three North Union FFA members competed in the District Six FFA Small Gas Engines Contest at Delaware JVS. The team of Jake Davis, Kyle Swartzentruber, and Tyler Patton placed second in a field of 33 teams. The team must work together to figure out problems or bugs with each small engine. The team has ten stations of small engines parts and functions. The host school sets up the stations to test students on various aspects of small engines. The stations could include identifying small engine parts, small engines tools, and micrometer and caliper readings, calculating engine displacement, measuring clearance and tolerances and looking up parts on a prospective engine’s website. The team has to come up with a step by step mental approach to solve the problems. Many times the “bugs” are in relationship to each other and it is a must for the team to work together. The team advanced to the State Contest at The Ohio State University ATI. They competed against the winners of the 10 other FFA Districts in Ohio. The team is the first from North Union to make it beyond districts and advance to the State level. |
