Six North Union FFA Members Receive State FFA Degrees

Six FFA members received the coveted State FFA Degree at the 79th State FFA convention. The State FFA degree is given only to the top two percent of the over 23,000 Ohio FFA members. The following members received their degrees based on the 30 mandated criteria's; some of these are they must have earned $3000 gross earnings from their Supervised Agricultural Experience projects, competed in various FFA Career Development Event's, and attended or have been involved in FFA and school activities.

Emily Davis, daughter of Bruce and Marsha Davis, had Supervised Agricultural Experience projects that included raising market hogs. In the FFA, Emily was involved in the agronomy, parliamentary procedure, farm management and cooperative contests, junior fair board and attended both national and state FFA conventions. Emily is very active in school related activities. She has been in national honor society, student council, class play and a member of the softball and basketball teams. She served as FFA treasurer and vice president.

Blake McElroy, son of Randy McElroy and Rose Speicher, had SAE's that included market hogs and job placement hours at Brill Family Farms. In FFA, he was active in the Wildlife Management CDE, Dairy Cattle CDE, Jr. Fair board, and State FFA Leadership Nights. He attended the State FFA convention. In school related activities, Blake has participated in football, wrestling, baseball and served on North Union student council.

Jacci Erwin, daughter of Dan and Chris Erwin, has SAE's of Tunis breeding sheep, improvement projects and market hogs. Jacci's FFA experience's has her involved in the Parliamentary Procedure, Urban Soils, job interview, General Livestock CDE's, Jr. Fair board, and Community Care day. She has been involved in the Food for America Program, beef expo clean-up, attended FFA Camp, national FFA convention and state FFA conventions. Jacci, because of her outstanding SAE project, was named the winner in the District Six sheep proficiency and was named as state finalist where she placed second. Jacci will serve as FFA Sentinel for the 2007-08 school year.

Grant McNamee, son of Scott and Lisa McNamee, had SAE's that included improvement projects, breeding swine, breeding cattle, crop production and forage production. He has attended FFA camp, FFA meetings, both state and national FFA conventions. Grant has participated in CDE's of General Livestock, rural soils, and greenhand quiz. He was a district qualifier in the Diversified Livestock Proficiency award. In high school, he has participated in golf, basketball and baseball teams. Grant will serve as Student Advisor during the 2007-08 school year.

Kelsey Smith, daughter of Nevin and Jean Smith, has had SAE's of market steers and improvement projects. Kelsey's FFA experience's has her involved in the creed public speaking, farm management and greenhand quiz CDE's. She has been involved in Jr. Fair board, Community Care day, and attended State FFA Convention. Kelsey has been very active in school related activities. She has been in national honor society, Spanish club, art club, and a member of the volleyball, track, and basketball teams.

Justin Monroe, son of Jim and Rita Monroe, had SAE's that included improvement projects and breeding swine. Justin has attended FFA camp, FFA meetings, state convention and national FFA convention. Justin has participated in CDE's of meats and greenhand quiz. He has been involved in Jr. Fair board, Community Care day, and Ohio Beef expo clean-up. Justin has been very active in school related activities. He has been in class plays, musicals, French club, cross country team, and track teams.

The State FFA Degree is the highest degree a member can receive through the State FFA Association. These six members have worked long hours and have devoted their time to gain valuable skills that FFA has to offer, like personal growth, premier leadership, and career success. These members will now have the opportunity to try for the coveted American FFA degree. These students have become the 87th, 88th, 89th, 90th, 91st and 92nd members to receive the State FFA degree from the North Union FFA Chapter.
